Frank A. Smith, 86, a life long resident of Bentleyville, died Friday May 9, 2008 in the Mon Valley Hospital following a brief illness.
He was born October 21, 1921 in Bentleyville, PA, a son of the late Frank and Hattie Smith.
Mr. Smith was a veteran of WWII, serving with U.S. Army 124th Infantry as a Staff Sgt., machine gunner, and squad leader in the South Pacific Theater, including Australia, Guam, and New Guinea. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor. For his honorable service he was awarded the American Defense Service Medal with one bronze star, and the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal.
He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps., following his service to his country, he worked as a boilermaker for over 30 years, retiring in 1982.
He enjoyed bowling, playing area slots and watching westerns.
Mr. Smith was a member of the Boilermakers Local #154, Bentleyville American Legion Post #165, and Bentleyville Fraternal Order of Eagles #1809.
Surviving are three sons; Frank F. Smith and his wife Diana E. of Meadville, PA., Danny E. Smith and his wife Cindy L. of Phoenix AZ., and Larry E. Smith and his wife Stephana of Bentleyville, PA., three grandchildren; Jennifer Smith, Adam Smith, Richard Keith Dunlap; and three great grandchildren; Samantha Leigh McClain-Dunlap, Emma Quinn McClain-Dunlap, Fiona Paige McClain-Dunlap.
His wife, Florence E. Blackwood Smith, died September 6, 1996. Deceased in addition to his parents and wife, is one brother; John E. Smith, three sisters; Martha Luketich, Mildred Biscoe, and Rose Bailey, and one infant son.
Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 pm Sunday in the Greenlee Funeral Home, 619 Main Street, Bentleyville, PA., where funeral services will be held on Monday, May 12, 2008 at 10 am with the Rev. Sang Choi officiating. Internment will follow in the Beallsville Cemetery. Full military rites will be accorded by the Bentleyville American Legion Post #165. In lieu flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Bentworth Senior Citizens Center, 931 Main Street Bentleyville, PA 15314.
